Why IDS: Staff Development

Student Centered | Ideals | Staff Development

The technology of a core curriculum
We have worked together to create a school of excellence, where all teachers are stars and all children are successful. We developed this ambitious goal through a systematic three part staff development plan based on the technology of a core curriculum.

First, we focused on how we teach, in order to evoke positive attitudes and perceptions about learning. We set goals for our personal and professional growth, examined the research about effective ways to ask questions and to respond to students' questions and answers. We studied how to encourage our students to stay on task, and how to motivate ourselves and each other.

Second, we focused on what we teach, planning curriculum to exceed National and State Benchmarks.

Third, we focused on self-directed learning. We are studying brain-based education, which includes critical and higher level thinking skills, and we are discovering the most effective ways to motivate our students to become active learners. At IDS, our goal is to capitalize on our past and look to the future to achieve our full potential both as learners and as a school.
