Community
Building
How We Learn
Shapes What We Learn
We are a community. Everyday, our students are actively involved
in community activities and the celebration of fundamental human
values. We respect individual differences, value teamwork, seek
cooperative approaches in our planning and problem solving,
believe in hard work and aiming for one's personal best effort
and take joy in one another's achievements and successes, as
individuals with feelings and needs that deserve dignity, respect,
and reasonable accommodation.
There is work to be done, but
it is done in a spirit of partnership. We work together, and we play together - and every member of
the community is important!
At IDS, the children learn and grow with a strong sense of relationship
to all other members of the community. They see their teachers
as friendly helpers, and they know that the teachers view them
the same.

Developing
a Hands-On Approach to Life
Both in and out of the classroom,
we help students to approach
learning experientially, to establish connections between abstract
theory and concrete, practical application to the world in which
we live.
At IDS, studies of math,
government, the laws of physics, foreign language, language
arts, ecology and other subjects are translated
into a for-profit student business, a school postal service,
musical performances, a pond reclamation project, boat and
parachute
designs, Spanish fiestas, field trips, various community
service projects, student councils in all divisions, a survey
of the
property, school meetings run by the students themselves,
older with younger student book buddies, and more!

The Parent Role
in our School Community
Active parent involvement plays
a key role in the life of our
school community. Parents affirm the importance of their child's
learning by expressing interest in schoolwork, attending school
functions, visiting classes, rooting on our athletic teams,
and working with the teachers to strengthen basic skills as
necessary. Parent involvement provides a strong incentive for
students to take their studies seriously!
At IDS, teachers work in close partnership with the parents
to provide a rich, exciting and nurturing learning environment
for the children. Parents have numerous opportunities to share
in their children's school experiences both in and out of the
classroom.
As room parents, they assist with
special programs and host
class parties. They serve as chauffeurs and chaperones on field
trips. Parents are most welcome to join our weekly All School
Meetings, and they are invited to attend all student performances
and presentations as their schedules permit. In joining various
student activities, parents are asked to keep in mind the teachers'
primary supervisory role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience
for all.

Healthy Communications
and Trust
We value clear and direct communications
at IDS. Teachers with
concerns about a student's progress are quick to contact the
family, while students and parents with questions, concerns
or suggestions are expected to contact the appropriate faculty
member or administrator right away to address the matter.
Our Board of Trustees includes
present and past parents as well as community leaders. The Board periodically invites parents,
staff and students to attend its sessions for open discussions
of various school issues.
